| A world renowned rehabilitation
and recreation program for children and adults who are deaf, blind and
multidisabled, the MGHSE program is the largest facility in the nation
serving those with disabilities. MGHSE provides therapeutic and recreational
activities in addition to hippotherapy, controlled physical therapy on
horseback, to more than 350 AIDB students per year.
The MGHSE arena is in need of a new metal roof. The leaking washers and brittle skylights have caused the insulation and cloth to deteriorate and fall, requiring that the interior of the facility be constantly monitored and protected. The cost to replace the roof is $149,877. The Susan Mott Webb Charitable Trust, Birmingham has already kicked off the campaign with a $25,000 gift. Many other donors are following suit, but we still need your help! “I’ve
seen things here that I’ve not seen before,” explains
parent and volunteer Jimmy Seago, Roanoke. Jimmy’s son, Jacob, a
spirited eight-year-old, was born without ears and has attended the Helen
Keller School, AIDB’s unit for students with multiple disabilities, for
four years. “I thought I had problems.
It’s a whole different world here. It’s amazing to see the kids try
so hard to do what is asked of them on a horse.”
